Psalm 86, Catholic Public Domain Version

  1. A Canticle Psalm to the sons of Korah. Its foundations are in the holy mountains:†

    Filiis Core. Psalmus cantici. Fundamenta ejus in montibus sanctis;

  2. 2

the Lord loves the gates of Zion above all the tabernacles of Jacob.

diligit Dominus portas Sion super omnia tabernacula Jacob.

  3. 3

Glorious things are being said of you, O City of God.

Gloriosa dicta sunt de te, civitas Dei!

  4. 4

I will be mindful of Rahab and of Babylon knowing me. Behold, the foreigners, and Tyre, and the people of the Ethiopians: these have been there.†

Memor ero Rahab et Babylonis, scientium me; ecce alienigenæ, et Tyrus, et populus Æthiopum, hi fuerunt illic.

  5. 5

Will not Zion say that this man and that man were born in her? And the Most High himself has founded her.†

Numquid Sion dicet: Homo et homo natus est in ea, et ipse fundavit eam Altissimus?

  6. 6

The Lord will explain, in the writings of peoples and of leaders, about those who have been in her.

Dominus narrabit in scripturis populorum et principum, horum qui fuerunt in ea.

  7. 7

For so the dwelling place within you is with all rejoicing.

Sicut lætantium omnium habitatio est in te.

Bishop Challoner’s notes

Bp. Richard Challoner, notes on the Douay-Rheims (1750). They comment on its older English wording, which can differ from the CPDV above; the verse numbers are matched to the CPDV.

  1. Verse 1

“The holy mountains” … The apostles and prophets. Eph. 2. 20.

  2. Verse 4

“Rahab” … Egypt, etc. To this Sion, which is the church of God, many shall resort from all nations.

  3. Verse 5

The meaning is, that Sion, viz., the church, shall not only be able to commemorate this or that particular person of renown born in her, but also to glory in great multitudes of people and princes of her communion; who have been foretold in the writings of the prophets, and registered in the writings of the apostles.
