Bp. Richard Challoner · chapter summary

Psalm 69, Catholic Public Domain Version

  1. Unto the end. A Psalm of David, in remembrance that the Lord had saved him.

In finem. Psalmus David in rememorationem, quod salvum fecerit eum Dominus.

  2. 2

O God, reach out to help me. O Lord, hasten to assist me.

Deus, in adjutorium meum intende; Domine, ad adjuvandum me festina.

  3. 3

May those who seek my soul be confounded and awed.

Confundantur, et revereantur, qui quærunt animam meam.

  4. 4

May those who wish evils upon me be turned back and blush with shame. May they be turned away immediately, blushing with shame, who say to me: “Well, well.”†

Avertantur retrorsum, et erubescant, qui volunt mihi mala; avertantur statim erubescentes qui dicunt mihi: Euge, euge!

  5. 5

Let all who seek you exult and rejoice in you, and let those who love your salvation forever say: “The Lord be magnified.”

Exsultent et lætentur in te omnes qui quærunt te; et dicant semper: Magnificetur Dominus, qui diligunt salutare tuum.

  6. 6

I am truly destitute and poor. O God, assist me. You are my helper and my deliverer. O Lord, do not delay.

Ego vero egenus et pauper sum; Deus, adjuva me. Adjutor meus et liberator meus es tu; Domine, ne moreris.

Bishop Challoner’s notes

Bp. Richard Challoner, notes on the Douay-Rheims (1750). They comment on its older English wording, which can differ from the CPDV above; the verse numbers are matched to the CPDV.

  1. Verse 4

Euge, euge. St. Jerome renders it, vah, vah! which is the voice of one insulting and deriding. Some understand it as a detestation of deceitful flatterers.
