St. Stephen of Hungary
St. Stephen of Hungary is remembered on August 16 in Bless’s calendar of saints. Traditionally invoked as patron of Hungary and kings.
Life
Grand prince of the Magyars, baptized as a boy, who received a crown from Pope Sylvester II in the year 1000 and made of raiding tribes a Christian kingdom: counties, courts, bishoprics, abbeys, and a law that every ten villages build a church.
He was severe with rebellion and open-handed to the poor, serving them with his own hands. He offered his crown to the Virgin as Hungary’s true queen — an offering the nation has never revoked. His incorrupt right hand is Hungary’s most treasured relic.
