Life
Simon the fisherman of Bethsaida, renamed Rock by the Lord he confessed as ‘the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ He walked on water and sank, swore fidelity and denied thrice, wept — and was forgiven with a threefold ‘feed my sheep.’
He led the infant Church from Jerusalem to Antioch to Rome, where Nero crucified him — head downward, tradition says, at his own asking, unworthy to die like his Lord. Over his grave stands the basilica that bears his name.
