Life
A fisherman of Bethsaida and disciple of John the Baptist who, hearing ‘Behold the Lamb of God,’ followed Jesus first — then went and fetched his brother Simon Peter. In the Gospels he is forever bringing people to Christ: the boy with the loaves, the Greeks at the feast.
Tradition carries his preaching around the Black Sea and into Greece, where he was bound — not nailed — to an X-shaped cross at Patras, preaching from it, they say, for two days. He is patron of Scotland and of Russia.
