Life
Officer of the Theban Legion, Christian soldiers from Egypt serving in Gaul, who refused an order to harm innocent Christians, answering that they were the emperor’s soldiers but first the soldiers of God. Decimated once, then again, the legion stood fast and was slaughtered at the place now called Saint-Maurice, whose abbey has kept unbroken prayer since 515.
