Life
Francesco Forgione of Pietrelcina, Capuchin friar of San Giovanni Rotondo, who in 1918 received the visible stigmata and bore the wounds for fifty years under medical scrutiny and no little suspicion — which he met with obedience.
His Mass could last hours; his confessional drew penitents by the hundred thousand, and he read many of their souls before they spoke. He built a great hospital, the Home for the Relief of Suffering, and founded the prayer groups that continue worldwide. Padre Pio remains one of the most beloved saints of modern times.
