St. Bridget of Sweden
St. Bridget of Sweden is remembered on July 23 in Bless’s calendar of saints. Traditionally invoked as patron of Sweden and Europe.
Life
A Swedish noblewoman, lady-in-waiting to the queen, wife of thirty years and mother of eight — one of them St. Catherine of Sweden. Widowed on pilgrimage, she gave herself wholly to the visions she had received since childhood, dictating Revelations that all Europe read.
She founded the Bridgettine order at Vadstena, moved to Rome to press — bluntly, to popes’ faces — for the papacy’s return from Avignon, and died there after a Jerusalem pilgrimage. She is co-patroness of Europe.
