St. Sharbel Makhlouf
St. Sharbel Makhlouf is remembered on July 24 in Bless’s calendar of saints. Traditionally invoked as patron of Lebanon.
Life
A Lebanese mountain boy who became a Maronite monk at Annaya, then for twenty-three years a hermit, dividing his days between the altar and the field, speaking little, possessing nothing. He suffered a stroke while raising the host at Mass and died on Christmas Eve, 1898.
Lights were seen at his grave; his body remained incorrupt for decades, exuding a fluid credited with thousands of cures. Christians and Muslims alike make pilgrimage to Annaya, where the silent monk keeps drawing crowds.
