Life
A Levite of Cyprus named Joseph, whom the apostles renamed Barnabas — ‘son of encouragement’ — for good reason: he sold his field for the common purse, vouched for the ex-persecutor Saul when all Jerusalem feared him, and fetched him from Tarsus to teach at Antioch.
Together they carried famine relief, then the Gospel through Cyprus and Asia Minor. When they quarreled over young Mark, Barnabas took the failure and remade him — the Church later got a Gospel out of that patience. Tradition returns him to Cyprus and a martyr’s death.
