Life
Eight French Jesuits who carried the Gospel to the Huron nation and beyond — learning the languages, mapping the country, and living in longhouses through winter and smallpox. Isaac Jogues, mutilated in a first captivity, returned to his mission and was tomahawked at Ossernenon in 1646.
Jean de Brébeuf, giant and gentlest of them, composed a Christmas carol in Huron and a manual for future missionaries; captured in 1649, he endured hours of torture without a cry. Ten years after their deaths, thousands of the people they served had received the faith.
