Life
‘Luke, a most beloved physician,’ Paul calls him — a Gentile convert who joined the second missionary journey and stayed to the end: ‘Luke alone is with me,’ Paul writes from his last prison.
His Gospel gives us the Annunciation, the Magnificat, the shepherds, the prodigal son, and the good thief; his Acts of the Apostles, the Church’s first history. Tradition makes him a painter of the Virgin — fittingly, since his pen painted her portrait forever.
