Life
Vietnam’s Christians endured three centuries of recurring persecution — by some counts a hundred thousand dead or more. From that host the Church has canonized one hundred seventeen: bishops, priests, catechists, mothers of families, soldiers, fishermen.
Andrew Dung-Lac, a poor boy who took a saint’s name at baptism, became a diocesan priest, was twice ransomed from prison, and was finally beheaded at Hanoi in 1839. The martyrs’ feast keeps all their names alive in one.
