Life

Third successor of Peter at Rome, remembered by tradition as a fellow worker of Paul. When the church of Corinth deposed its clergy in a quarrel, Clement wrote them a letter — the oldest Christian document outside the New Testament.

It pleads for order, humility, and love, pointing to the phoenix and the apostles’ martyrdoms. Tradition holds he was drowned with an anchor about his neck.

In their own words

Each quotation names the work it comes from. Bless quotes these in the comments beside the verses listed under In Scripture.

Love unites us to God; love covers a multitude of sins; love bears all things, is long-suffering in all things. There is nothing base, nothing arrogant in love.

Letter to the Corinthians, 49, c. 96

Let us fix our gaze on the blood of Christ and realize how precious it is to His Father, since it was poured out for our salvation and brought the grace of repentance to the whole world.

Letter to the Corinthians, 7, c. 96
