Life

Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, an Albanian girl who left home at eighteen for the Loreto sisters and India, and eighteen years later heard on a train to Darjeeling a ‘call within a call’: to leave the convent for the slums, to quench the thirst of Christ in the poorest of the poor.

With a white sari, five rupees, and no plan but God, she founded the Missionaries of Charity: homes for the dying, the abandoned, the leprous, the unwanted, on every continent. Through it all she bore a fifty-year interior darkness known only to her directors. The Nobel committee gave her its Peace Prize; Calcutta gave her a state funeral; the Church gave her the name she always used — Mother.
