St. Stanislaus
St. Stanislaus is remembered on April 11 in Bless’s calendar of saints. Traditionally invoked as patron of Poland.
Life
Bishop of Kraków who defended his people against King Bolesław the Bold — reproving the king’s cruelties and injustices to his face and finally excommunicating him. The king called it treason.
Bolesław killed him with his own sword during Mass at the church of St. Michael, and had the body dismembered. The deed cost the king his throne, and gave Poland its patron: the bishop who would not be silent.
