Life
A daughter of revolutionary Grenoble who waited thirty years to be a missionary, then sailed at forty-nine with four Religious of the Sacred Heart to the Missouri frontier, opening the first free school west of the Mississippi. At seventy-one she finally reached the Potawatomi, who — unable to teach her their language — named her for what they saw: ‘the woman who prays always.’
