Life
Bishop of Ravenna when it was the imperial capital, nicknamed Chrysologus — ‘golden-worded’ — for sermons so short and dense the people begged for more. He warned that no one who jests with the devil can rejoice with Christ.
Over a hundred of those brief homilies survive, warm on the Incarnation, practical on almsgiving, fasting, and prayer. He is a Doctor of the Church.

Each quotation names the work it comes from. Bless quotes these in the comments beside the verses listed under In Scripture.
Prayer knocks, fasting obtains, mercy receives. Prayer, mercy and fasting: these three are one, and they give life to each other.
Let us use fasting to make up for what we have lost by despising others. Let us offer our souls in sacrifice by means of fasting.

“Pay attention, lest you perform your justice before men, in order to be seen by them; otherwise you shall not have a reward with your Father, who is in heaven. Therefore, when you give alms, do not choose to sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the towns, so that they may be honored by men. Amen I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your almsgiving may be in secret, and your Father, who sees in secret, will repay you. …
