Life
Bishop of Myra in Lycia, imprisoned in the last persecution and present, by tradition, at Nicaea. The stories the world loves — the three bags of gold tossed at night to dower three poor girls, the sailors saved, the children restored — made him the most popular saint of East and West alike, and, by long descent, the gift-bringer of Christmas.
