Life
A Burgundian baroness, happily married mother of four, widowed at twenty-eight when a hunting companion shot her husband by accident — a man she eventually forgave and stood godmother for his child. Under Francis de Sales’s direction her grief became a vocation.
Together they founded the Visitation, an order open to widows and women of fragile health whom other convents refused. She governed its spread to eighty-seven houses with warm good sense, through the deaths of nearly everyone she loved. She taught her sisters to hold fast in prayer and never let go.
