Life
The last Holy Roman Emperor of the Ottonian line, who ruled with a monk’s discipline — founding the see of Bamberg, restoring churches, twice marching to secure a threatened papacy — and asked a monastery to receive him as an oblate. Its abbot accepted his vow of obedience, then ordered him back to his throne.
