St. Camillus de Lellis
St. Camillus de Lellis is remembered on July 18 in Bless’s calendar of saints. Traditionally invoked as patron of nurses, hospitals, and the sick.
Life
A six-foot-six soldier and compulsive gambler who lost everything he owned, was converted while working as a builder’s laborer, and — refused by the Capuchins for a diseased leg — turned to the hospitals whose neglect he knew as a patient. His Ministers of the Sick took a fourth vow: to serve even the plague-stricken. He invented the red cross on the habit and the field ambulance.
