Life
A Portuguese Augustinian who jumped ship to the Franciscans hoping for martyrdom in Morocco, and was blown by storm and providence to Italy instead. At an ordination where no one had prepared a sermon, the young friar was told to speak — and astonished everyone.
Francis himself commissioned him to teach theology, so long as it did not extinguish the spirit of prayer. His sermons drew crowds of thirty thousand at Padua, where he burned himself out by thirty-five. Rome canonized him within a year, and the world asks his help finding everything it loses.
