St. Aloysius Gonzaga
The feast day of St. Aloysius Gonzaga is June 21, a memorial in the US Catholic calendar. Traditionally invoked as patron of youth and students.
Life
Eldest son of a princely Italian house, page in the courts of Florence and Madrid, who signed away a marquisate to enter the Jesuit novitiate at seventeen — where his director, the future saint Robert Bellarmine, had to moderate his austerities.
When plague struck Rome in 1591 he begged to serve in the hospitals, carrying the dying on his shoulders. He caught the fever and died at twenty-three, on the octave of Corpus Christi, as he had foretold. He is patron of Catholic youth.
