Life
Two brothers of Thessalonica, Constantine the philosopher and Michael the governor, who left careers in Byzantium to answer a Moravian prince’s plea for teachers. Taking the monastic names Cyril and Methodius, they invented an alphabet for the Slavs and translated the Scriptures and liturgy into their tongue.
Fighting all their lives for the people’s right to worship in their own language, they appealed to Rome and won. Cyril died there in 869; Methodius labored on as archbishop through prison and slander. They are co-patrons of Europe.
