Life
Duke of Bohemia, raised Christian by his grandmother St. Ludmila in a half-pagan land. As ruler he built churches, judged justly, and was remembered for carrying firewood and alms to the poor with his own hands — the memory behind the carol of Good King Wenceslas.
His brother Boleslav, heading a pagan reaction, invited him to a feast and cut him down at the church door; his dying words forgave. The Czech crown itself is named for him, the nation’s once and perpetual king.
