Life

Son of an innkeeper on the Anatolian high road, a boy-ascetic who became the wonder-worker of his province — healing, reconciling villages, blessing crops — and briefly, unwillingly, a bishop. Emperors sought his blessing; he preferred his iron cage on the hillside.
