Life
When Judas’s place among the Twelve stood empty, the hundred and twenty prayed and cast lots between two men who had companied with the Lord ‘beginning from the baptism of John, until the day when he was taken up from us.’ The lot fell on Matthias.
Of his later road tradition speaks variously — Judea, Cappadocia, the shores of the Caspian — but his election itself is his sermon: the Church filled the wound of betrayal with a witness of the Resurrection.
