Life
Son of a Spanish knight and a freed Black woman of Lima, apprenticed to a barber-surgeon, received by the Dominicans as a servant because the law barred him from vows — until his holiness overruled the law. Infirmarian, herbalist, friend of rats and orphans alike, he founded an orphanage and fed the city’s poor daily. Rose of Lima was his friend; all Peru was at his funeral.
