St. Mark
The feast day of St. Mark is April 25, a feast in the US Catholic calendar. Traditionally invoked as patron of Venice and notaries.
Life
John Mark of Jerusalem, in whose mother’s house the Church prayed while Peter sat in prison. He sailed with Paul and Barnabas, turned back once — Paul minded, Barnabas didn’t — and years later Paul asked for him again, as useful to him in the ministry.
His Gospel, the shortest and swiftest, preserves Peter’s preaching, tradition says. As founder of the church of Alexandria he was martyred there; Venice later carried off his relics and built St. Mark’s over them.
