Life
Cuauhtlatoatzin, ‘the talking eagle,’ an Indian of Cuautitlán baptized in middle age, to whom the Virgin appeared on Tepeyac hill in December 1531, speaking Nahuatl, calling herself the merciful mother of all who dwell in this land.
When the bishop asked for a sign, she filled Juan Diego’s tilma with Castilian roses in winter — and when he opened it, her image was on the cloth, where it remains after five centuries. Within a decade, millions of his people had asked for baptism. He spent his last years as guardian of the shrine.
