Life
Angelo Roncalli, a sharecropper’s son from Bergamo: army chaplain, historian, Vatican diplomat in Bulgaria, Turkey — where he helped Jewish refugees escape — and France, then patriarch of Venice, elected pope at nearly seventy-seven as a ‘caretaker.’
The caretaker summoned the Second Vatican Council, threw open the windows, visited Rome’s prisons and children’s hospitals, and wrote Pacem in Terris to the whole world in the shadow of the missile crisis. ‘Good Pope John’ died as the Council’s first session ended, mourned far beyond the Church.
