Life
Karol Wojtyła of Wadowice: laborer and clandestine seminarian under Nazi occupation, actor, poet, philosopher, skiing archbishop of Kraków under communism — and in 1978 the first non-Italian pope in four and a half centuries. He began by telling the world not to be afraid.
In twenty-six years he made 104 journeys to 129 countries, survived an assassin’s bullet and forgave him in his cell, helped bring down the Iron Curtain without a shot, wrote fourteen encyclicals, and taught to the end — letting the world watch him grow old and die. Millions in St. Peter’s Square answered by calling for him to be named a saint at once.
