Life

Bishop of Poitiers, a married convert from paganism who became the West’s hammer against Arianism — exiled to Phrygia for it, where he learned the Greek fathers and brought their theology home.

His twelve books On the Trinity remain the first great Latin treatment of the mystery. Augustine quarried him; the Church made him a Doctor. Even his exile he called a gift: it gave him time to write.

In their own words

Each quotation names the work it comes from. Bless quotes these in the comments beside the verses listed under In Scripture.

I am well aware, almighty God and Father, that in my life I owe You a most particular duty. It is to make my every thought and word speak of You.

On the Trinity, I.37, c. 360

The best reader is one who awaits the meaning of what is written from the words themselves rather than imposes it.

On the Trinity, II.2, c. 360
