Life
Helena Kowalska, third of ten children of a poor Polish family, a sister of Our Lady of Mercy assigned to kitchens, gardens, and gatehouses — and the confidante of Christ, who asked her to be the apostle and secretary of his mercy.
Her Diary, six hundred notebook pages written under obedience, carried the message: mercy is God’s greatest attribute, and trust the vessel that draws it. From it came the Divine Mercy image, chaplet, and feast now kept the Sunday after Easter. She died of tuberculosis at thirty-three.
