Life
A Flemish farmer’s son who volunteered for the Hawaiian mission and then for the one post no one wanted: the leper settlement of Kalaupapa. He built houses, coffins, water lines, and hope, dressed wounds daily, and after eleven years, a leper himself, began to preach to his people as one of them. He died among his people at forty-nine.
