Life
Patriarch of Alexandria, a hard fighter in a hard age, whose lasting glory is the defense of a single word: Theotokos, God-bearer. When Nestorius would allow Mary only ‘Mother of Christ,’ Cyril saw the unity of Christ himself at stake — if her child is not God, we are not saved.
At the Council of Ephesus in 431 his teaching prevailed, and the crowds escorted the bishops home with torches. His commentaries and letters made him the Doctor of the Incarnation.
