Life
Bishop of Sebaste in Armenia, a physician by training, martyred under Licinius after — the old accounts say — a period hiding in a cave where wild animals came to him to be healed. On the road to prison he saved a boy choking on a fishbone, the miracle that made his name.
From it comes the blessing of throats on his feast, two candles crossed at the neck — one of the most beloved of the Church’s small rites, carried on for seventeen centuries.
