Life
A Swabian Dominican with perhaps the widest learning of the Middle Ages: he wrote on logic, botany, zoology, minerals, astronomy, and theology alike, insisting that observation of nature honors nature’s God. His students called him ‘the Great’ in his own lifetime; one of them was Thomas Aquinas, whose genius Albert recognized and defended.
Made bishop of Regensburg, he resigned after three years to return to teaching, and in old age traveled across Europe to defend his dead pupil’s theology. He is the patron of the natural sciences.
