# A Catholic Bible app where *the saints are the comments*

In Bless: Scroll Catholic Bible, the comments under each verse are quotations from saints and Church Fathers, each naming its source or saying plainly that none confirms it, plus Bishop Challoner’s notes and links to the Catechism where they exist. None of it is written by AI, and every comment is free.

## The comments on *Matthew 25:40.*

Open the comments on a verse and they arrive in a fixed order. The **Catechism** is pinned on top by paragraph number and the Catechism’s own section heading, with a link to the text on vatican.va — Bless never quotes it. **Bishop Challoner’s** note comes next, where he wrote one. Then the **saints**.

These are the quotations linked to Matthew 25:40 in the data the app ships (in the app, the comments are topped up from the whole collection so that every verse has a few voices). St. John Chrysostom wrote his words about this very passage; the others were tagged to its theme. Each one names the work it comes from.

No likes, no follower counts, no strangers arguing. **Amen** is your own tap, and it stays yours.

And in response, the King shall say to them, ‘Amen I say to you, whenever you did this for one of these, the least of my brothers, you did it for me.’

## Three kinds of voices, *and where each comes from.*

Saints & Church Fathers

### 192 quotations from 59 saints

Augustine, Chrysostom, Jerome, Thérèse, Teresa of Ávila, Thomas Aquinas, John of the Cross — each quotation names its work and, where known, its year. 174 are sourced; 18 popular sayings say plainly that no source confirms them.

On this verse

> Love, and do what thou wilt.

Homilies on 1 John, VII.8, c. 407

Bishop Challoner

### 1,894 notes on 1,763 verses

Richard Challoner revised the Douay-Rheims in the 18th century and wrote short notes on hard or important verses. He wrote on the older wording — here “supersubstantial bread”, where the CPDV says “life-sustaining” — so read them as notes on the passage, not on every word.

> Give us this day our life-sustaining bread.

— [Matthew 6:11](https://blessbible.app/bible/matthew/6/#v11) · CPDV

Bp. Richard Challoner

"Supersubstantial bread"... In St. Luke the same word is rendered daily bread. It is understood of the bread of life, which we receive in the Blessed Sacrament.

Bp. Richard Challoner, notes on the Douay-Rheims (1750)

The Catechism

### 3,928 links to 1,177 paragraphs

The Catechism of the Catholic Church is never quoted. Bless shows the paragraph number and the Catechism’s own section heading, and links to the full text on vatican.va. A link marked “cf.” is a looser connection.

> For God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that all who believe in him may not perish, but may have eternal life.

How far it reaches

## Honest about *what the saints wrote about.*

Every verse opens to at least two saints. Most of them did not write about that verse. Here is the whole picture, counted from the app’s data, across all 35,804 verses:

1. **36** verses
have a quotation written about that very passage — 14 quotations in all, like St. John Chrysostom on Matthew 25:40 and St. Augustine on 1 John 4:7.
2. **339** more verses
have a quotation tagged to their theme.
3. **4,902** more verses
sit in the 178 chapters that have tagged quotations, and borrow from their chapter.
4. **30,527** verses
have none tagged to them. So that no verse is left alone, Bless fills their comments from the whole pool of 192 quotations — which is why the same voices recur across many verses.

Bishop Challoner’s notes cover about 1 verse in 20 (4.9%); Catechism links about 1 in 6 (16.0%). It is not a verse-by-verse commentary, and Bless doesn’t pretend to be one.

On this website a quotation appears beside a passage only where Bless’s data ties it there, and it says how: **on this verse**, or **on this theme**. The fill is never published here.

Popular saying, source unconfirmed

18 of the 192 quotations are popular sayings that no source confirms, like this one. Bless shows them, because people search for them, and says so right under each.

FAQ

## Questions, *answered.*

### Are the comments written by AI?

No. Every comment is a quotation from a saint or Church Father — with its source, or marked “source unconfirmed” — a note by Bishop Challoner, or a Catechism paragraph reference. None is written by a model.

### Is every quotation about the verse it sits under?

No. Only 14 quotations were written about a particular verse. Others are tagged to a verse’s theme, and the rest are chosen from the pool so every verse has company — see the counts above.

### Are the comments free?

Yes, all of them: the saints, Bishop Challoner’s notes and the Catechism links. Writing your own private note is part of [Bless Premium](https://blessbible.app/pricing/); reading your notes is always free.

### Does Bless quote the Catechism?

No. It shows the paragraph number and the Catechism’s own section heading and links to vatican.va.
