The Gospel is Matthew 24:37-44. Updated October 20, 2026 ## The liturgical day Liturgical color Violet - **Celebration**: First Sunday of Advent - **Season**: Advent · Week 1 - **Rank**: Sunday - **Sunday cycle**: Year A - **Weekday cycle**: Cycle I ## Mass readings (US) ### First Reading: Isaiah 2:1-5 Read in the CPDV: [Isaiah 2](https://blessbible.app/bible/isaiah/2/) ### Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 122:1-2, 3-4, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 Read in the CPDV: [Psalm 122 (121 in the Vulgate)](https://blessbible.app/bible/psalms/121/) ### Second Reading: Romans 13:11-14 - 11 And we know the present time, that now is the hour for us to rise up from sleep. For already our salvation is closer than when we first believed. - 12 The night has passed, and the day draws near. Therefore, let us cast aside the works of darkness, and be clothed with the armor of light. - 13 Let us walk honestly, as in the daylight, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in promiscuity and sexual immorality, not in contention and envy. - 14 Instead, be clothed with the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in its desires. Catholic Public Domain Version Read in the CPDV: [The whole of Romans 13](https://blessbible.app/bible/romans/13/) ### Alleluia: Cf. Psalm 85:8 Read in the CPDV: [Psalm 85 (84 in the Vulgate)](https://blessbible.app/bible/psalms/84/) ### Gospel: Matthew 24:37-44 - 37 And just as in the days of Noah, so also will be the advent of the Son of man. - 38 For it will be just as it was in the days before the flood: eating and drinking, marrying and being given in marriage, even until that day when Noah entered into the ark. - 39 And they did not realize it, until the flood came and took them all away. So also will the advent of the Son of man be. - 40 Then two men will be in a field: one will be taken up, and one will be left behind. - 41 Two women will be grinding at a millstone: one will be taken up, and one will be left behind. - 42 Therefore, be vigilant. For you do not know at what hour your Lord will return. - 43 But know this: if only the father of the family knew at what hour the thief would arrive, he would certainly keep vigil and not permit his house to be broken into. - 44 For this reason, you also must be prepared, for you do not know at what hour the Son of man will return. Catholic Public Domain Version Read in the CPDV: [The whole of Matthew 24](https://blessbible.app/bible/matthew/24/) Computed by Bless from the US Lectionary cycle — confirm with your parish. In US parishes the readings are proclaimed from the NABRE; the text shown here is the Catholic Public Domain Version. Old Testament readings and the psalm are listed with a link to their chapter: the US Lectionary numbers some of their verses differently from the CPDV, so their text is not printed here. Psalm citations keep the Lectionary’s Hebrew numbering; the CPDV numbers the Psalms as the Vulgate does. Spotted a wrong date, color or citation?
