## About Psalms

About Psalms · Prayer collection

The Psalms are Israel's prayer book: one hundred fifty poems of praise, complaint, thanksgiving, fury, and trust, gathered over many centuries. Tradition connects the collection with King David, who stands behind many of them, though the book names other authors too and grew long after his time. It was compiled so that God's people would never lack words for any state of the soul — there is a psalm for despair as surely as for joy. It became the daily prayer of Jesus, and remains the daily prayer of the Church.

Beatus vir. The good man is happy. Alleluia, of the returning of Aggeus and Zacharias. Of the returning, etc. This is in the Greek and Latin, but not in the Hebrew. It signifies that this psalm was proper to be sung at the time of the return of the people from their captivity; to inculcate to them, how happy they might be, if they would be constant in the service of God.

The holy fathers, in a mystical sense, understand these steps, or ascensions, of the degrees by which Christians spiritually ascend to virtue and perfection; and to the true temple of God in the heavenly Jerusalem.
