# The Second Letter of John

The Second Letter of John is the twenty-fourth of the 27 books of the New Testament: a single chapter of 13 verses.

About 2 John · Brief letter

Second John is a one-page note from the elder — the voice of the Johannine churches — to a congregation he calls the elect lady and her children. It distills his teaching to two commands: love one another, and hold the truth that Jesus Christ came in the flesh, refusing hospitality to traveling teachers who deny it. It was written for an age when the faith moved from house to house and a doorstep decision could protect or poison a whole community.

2 John

1. The Elder to the Elect Lady, and those born of her, whom I love in the truth: and not I alone, but also all those who have known the truth,[†](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#n1)
2. [2](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v2)
because the truth which dwells in us shall be with us for eternity.
propter veritatem, quæ permanet in nobis, et nobiscum erit in æternum.
3. [3](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v3)
May grace, mercy, and peace be with you from God the Father, and from Christ Jesus, the Son of the Father, in truth and in love.
Sit vobiscum gratia, misericordia, pax a Deo Patre, et a Christo Jesu Filio Patris in veritate, et caritate.
4. [4](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v4)
I was very glad because I discovered some of your sons walking in the truth, just as we received the commandment from the Father.
Gavisus sum valde, quoniam inveni de filiis tuis ambulantes in veritate, sicut mandatum accepimus a Patre.
5. [5](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v5)
And now I petition you, Lady, not as if writing a new commandment to you, but instead that commandment which we have had from the beginning: that we love one another.
6. [6](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v6)
And this is love: that we walk according to his commandments. For this is the commandment that you have heard in the same way from the beginning, and in which you should walk.
7. [7](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v7)
For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess that Jesus Christ has arrived in the flesh. Such a one as this is a deceiver and an antichrist.
8. [8](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v8)
Be cautious for yourselves, lest you lose what you have accomplished, and so that, instead, you may receive a full reward.
9. [9](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v9)
Everyone who withdraws and does not remain in the doctrine of Christ, does not have God. Whoever remains in the doctrine, such a one as this has both the Father and the Son.
10. [10](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v10)
If anyone comes to you, and does not bring this doctrine, do not be willing to receive him into the house, and do not speak a greeting to him.[†](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#n10)
11. [11](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v11)
For whoever speaks a greeting to him, is speaking with his evil works.
12. [12](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v12)
I have much more to write to you, but I am not willing to do so through paper and ink. For I hope that I may be with you in the future, and that I may speak face to face, so that your joy may be full.
13. [13](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v13)
The sons of your Elect Sister greet you.
Salutant te filii sororis tuæ Electæ.

## Bishop Challoner’s notes

Bp. Richard Challoner, notes on the Douay-Rheims (1750). They comment on its older English wording, which can differ from the CPDV above; the verse numbers are matched to the CPDV.

1. Verse [1](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v1)
That is, the ancient bishop St. John, being the only one of the twelve apostles then living.
2. Verse [1](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v1)
Some conjecture that Elect might be the name of a family, or of a particular church; but the general opinion is, that it is the proper name of a lady, so eminent for her piety and great charity, as to merit this Epistle from St. John.
3. Verse [10](https://blessbible.app/bible/2-john/#v10)
This admonition is in general, to forewarn the faithful of the dangers which may arise from a familiarity with those who have prevaricated and gone from the true faith, and with such as teach false doctrine. But this is not forbidding a charity for all men, by which we ought to wish and pray for the eternal salvation of every one, even of our enemies.
